Elevated estrogen levels are a risk factor for breast cancer. Excessive use of diethylstilbestrol (DES) is a risk factor for breast cancer. Women at high risk of having breast cancer should use a hormone replacement therapy to meet the levels of estrogen at the time of their breast cancer diagnosis. The B.C. Diethylstilbestrol (DES) should be avoided during periods of high or elevated risk for breast cancer or if increased estrogen levels are noted. If low estrogen levels and/or high estrogen levels are noted, diethylstilbestrol (DES) can be used for breast cancer prevention.
