So in August 1939, they bought the scrap yard. It opened next week. Founded in 1868, the city is not the sort of place you think of when you think of a great metropolitan city. It's made of the largest city blocks in North America that are mostly industrial areas, mostly large industrial buildings and all the housing is owned and used by the people of the city. The area in the center of the city has a population of about 6.5 million. Over half of the city's population are employed; about two-thirds of them working in manufacturing. When the city first came into existence in 1861, the population size was almost four times the size of today. Today it has shrunk to around 4.6 million. Now the city is home to only 200,000 people; the population size is about 600,000. Most of the people who live in the city are retirees, so the city's job market is relatively weak. And yet, when you see the city today, you realize that the size is very small. It's a little city town; it's not big, but it's a small city. When I lived here, I didn't live with any sort of particular demographic; my job was the kind of construction work you did for the federal government. It was a pretty good gig, and I was part of a family business that provided the goods and services that the government wanted to get done. A great part of the manufacturing in this city is driven by railroads like the Pennsylvania Railroad, which connects the city with other industrial centers in the south-west. There is an industrial district called the "East" that is about four miles north of where you're standing now. This area was originally a railroad route when it became a city, and then another railroad route called the "Granite Belt" was built for commercial traffic, and so it would connect the city to both sides of that railroad through the suburbs. Then the railroad was transferred and all of a sudden the manufacturing started to take off, and then this route was built for commercial traffic as well, which meant that it was a busy, congested route at first, with trains going at high speed. You would pass through this area, which is about a quarter mile from the city wall, and all you could get there were one or two big heavy industrial cars coming in, and they had to run through the streets of West Allis, which is the western portion of the city, then into the city wall and back, then into the suburbs, and finally they would be gone |
